HEY, HEY, HAY! A TALE OF BALES AND THE MACHINES THAT MAKE THEM
By Christy Mihaly, illustrated by Joe Cepeda
Mower blades slice through the grass.
A new row falls with every pass.
Next, we run the tedder through
to fluff the grass and dry the dew.
This rollicking book tells the story of a farm girl and her mother sharing in the haymaking chores. Mom drives the tractor, pulling the mower to mow the tall grass, the tedder to aerate the cut grass, and then the baler to roll the grass into bales. It's an exuberant celebration of farming, the seasons, and the mother-child relationship, beautifully illustrated by Joe Cepeda. A glossary and a recipe for making switchel, the traditional haymaker's drink, (being enjoyed by the students at right) are included.
Special Feature for educators: Find a free, downloadable Lesson Plan with lots of great ideas for teaching with Hey, Hey, HAY! It includes Common Core references, and suggestions for teaching about vocabulary words, homophones and onomatopoeia.
"This nostalgic, rhyming ode to baling hay is narrated by a girl whose broad grin makes clear her love for farm life."
